DR.HUR JUN:- THE PULSE OF KOREA
Brief about Dr. Hur Jun:
“Wherever the Art of Medicine is loved, there
is also a love for humanity”. It is a
quote from Hippocrates and this can be applied for Dr. Hur Jun- The Father of medicine in East
Asia. He was like a messenger of peace and health from God to the native people
of Korea. He treated people equally and did not discriminate citizens on the
basis of religion, caste or gender. He became a royal physician through his
hard work but still he wanted to help the common and native people of his area.
This portrays that he was a down
to earth man.
Dr. Hur Jun as a quick problem solver:
Hur Jun was born in 1546
in Yangcheon in the first year of King Myeonjong’s reign. During his childhood
he faced many problems socially and economically. Although he was a son of a
nobleman he was treated like any other common person. He even got caught in the
net of drugs. At an early age he started supplying drugs.
But a change had to come
and one fine day he decided to shift to a new place location for developing his
career properly and also for keeping his mother happy. Along with his mother, Hur
Jun shifted to Sangcheon. This change brought a real turning point in his life
which was destined to change the fate of thousands of people.
Hur Jun’s ability to quickly analyze the problems
that he was facing and make definite efforts to come out of it is the first
quality I admire in him. His burning desire to succeed is very
inspiring.
Henri Kaiser has said that
"Problems are only opportunities in
work clothes." Hur Jun was a living example of this saying.
Dr. Hur Jun’s journey from Yangcheon to
Sangcheon :
Many people always work hard for themselves but there are
very few gems who work for the society.
As the leading socialist
Bill Drayton who brought many changes in the world, said, “Social entrepreneurs are not content just to give a fish or teach how
to fish. They will not rest until they have revolutionized the fishing
industry.”
Great people always value time.
They are workaholics. They always want to do something or the other with great
eagerness to bring change. And for them Age is no bar. He was an intelligent
boy not only in his theory part but also in the practicals. Early signs of
being a legend were visible when he was just 24. He cured the minister Yoo Hee
Chun’s wife who was on the verge of dying, especially when all the doctors had given
up hope. This is the third quality I like in him, that is to never give up and fight till the
end. Hope is like a rising sun and where
there is hope there is success.
The 4th quality
of Hur Jun that motivates me is that his steadfast focus on achieving his goals. He did not run away from
hurdles or obstacles but faced them because problems can be solved only when
you face them. By showing our back to problems, we do not solve them, we only
end up fooling ourselves.
One more important thing I
like of Hur Jun is that he had the character and the courage of conviction which he showed by
learning medicine. It was not an easy job and he also had to survive and
overcome many hurdles. He can be called a hero.
I have seen people who top in their class but have no obstacles in their
way or do not have to work hard for earning money.
Hur Jun wrote a very famous book on medicines
called Dongui Bogam (MIRROR OF EAST MEDICINE) which is seen as the base and the foundation of traditional Korean medicine.
He wrote this book to divert the people from the treating methods of
Ming Dynasty in Korea. He emphasized on using herbs and nature as the healer of
diseases. He also asked people to use herbs which were easily available to
people at that time. At every
step
he did something for which people will like him. I also like him because he
told us to never stop
anywhere whatever the circumstances may be and stop not till the goal is
reached.
He
said, “Don’t stop when you are tired but stop when the goal is completed.” He
increased the awareness of people towards medicines in such a way that even the
disease feels afraid of reaching the body. His motivating words moved people
towards accepting medicines for treatment in place of unscientific, poor
traditions of treating illnesses.
He
spread his work in many countries such as Vietnam, China, Japan and Singapore
and his works are still regarded as the classics of all time. He worked whole-heartedly
with kings and his relatives but did not forget the common people. He once said
that a city is made of millions of common people and not of hundreds of royal
people. Commoners can’t be ignored. He found many herbs which were easily
accessible to the Koreans and named these in simple letters which were easily
understood by the natives. This is the fifth quality in Hur Jun I admire deeply
he did not like to
complicate the things and tried to make everything simple. When we try to make
things complicated, we are not able to understand a single thing in the end.
Dr
Hur Jun tried to spread love and good health to people around the world and not
only to the people of his own country. Some special people are always kept in
mind no matter how many centuries have passed.
He
also stated that nothing
is left when we die but all our deeds remain here and we are remembered through
are deeds only.
Dr Hur Jun’s
Unique Specialty:
The
sixth quality I deeply admire in Hur Jun is that even when he became so famous he never
stopped working for the common people. He had the citizens in his heart.
He worked for them till his last breath.
His
books have been accepted by the UNESCO in the cultural heritage list.
He
once said to his child that to do something different one must become different.
He said among 4 apples if we put one banana then the banana would be different.
He stated that being different is not enough, the difference should always be
in good direction.
And
then came the day (9th OCTOBER 1615) when this angel left this world
making the whole world mourn but left a great example for others to follow.
I
SALUTE THIS KOREAN
LEGEND WHO CHANGED THE THINKING AND LIVES OF MANY PEOPLE THROUGH HIS KNOWLEDGE
AND DETERMINATION.
